Onboarding: 2023 Report

Key Insights for Building a Holistic Onboarding Experience

An Aspect43 Category Guide

A record number of people have changed jobs in the last two years.

According to Pew Research, nearly half of those that quit their job in 2021 changed their occupation or field of work. These shifts have brought onboarding back into focus as organizations re-evaluate their broader talent strategies.

Today’s talent economy requires an intentional approach to preboarding and new hires, but should also include experiences for crossboarding for internal transfers or promotions, offboarding employees, engaging alumni and rehiring employees rejoining the organization.

While most organizations have some sort of onboarding program, very few employees strongly agree that their organization does a great job of onboarding new employees, according to Gallup. The reason? Onboarding is often too small in scope and doesn’t effectively harness technology to deliver a compelling experience.

Key insights include:

  • The modern approach to onboarding must be broadened to include socialization, culturalization, training, retention and day-one readiness.
  • Onboarding consists of transitions throughout the employee lifecycle: preboarding & new hire, crossboarding, offboarding and reboarding.
  • Companies’ investment in onboarding programs leads to higher retention, engagement and productivity.
  • Onboarding & crossboarding are top purchases for companies this year.
  • The onboarding tech market is moving to solutions that offer easy compliance completion and connections through socialization and culturalization.
  • Much more!
